Global economic relations and business environment oblige business people to learn and follow the rules of good manners or etiquette accepted in societies of different countries. The breach of these rules may bring on the rupture of business connections and result in the loss of market shares. The rules of business etiquette changes with time. Nowadays some of them, like attitude towards women, have lost its relevance.




It is not enough to be just polite and friendly person. The basic principles of business etiquette are quite peculiar and can be represented in the following basic rules:

First rule – be always punctual. Being late for work hinders from general working process and shows that you are not reliable towards other people and their valuable time. It is very significant for a business person to have the ability to calculate time needed for accomplishing a certain task.

Second rule – do not throw words around. Each employee is obliged to keep secret the company confidential information. This rule concerns all business areas and units of the company ranged from human resources to technological. This rule also applies to staff talks on their personal life issues.

Third rule – do not care about yourself only but also about others. You won’t be successful in business if you ignore the opinion and concerns of clients, partners or customers. The reasons of failure in business may be selfishness, obsession with your own issues, attempt to cause damage to competitors or colleagues with the view of getting promoted within the company. Try to patiently listen to a person, learn to respect and accept others opinion. Get rid of intolerance to opposite views. Never humiliate your opponent and keep in mind that sooner or later you will run across a person who may behave with you in the same humiliating manner.

Forth rule – dress according to company dress code. A dress should be such that it is not too modern for the people whom we are interacting yet be able to create a positive impression on them. You dress should demonstrate your taste.

Fifth rule – speak and write literately.
Everything you talk and write shall be set out in good spelled form. The ability to speak literate influences the image of a person. The chance to make a contract depends on your skills of effective communication. People in business shall master the art of oratory speech. It is important to watch your own articulation, pronunciation and inflexion. Never apply slang words or abusive language; learn to listen to others showing your interest in conversation.
